I didn’t have much expectation for Andorra. I had just come back from the Olympics in France and figured I’d visit since it was one of the few European countries I hadn’t been to. After a long, winding bus ride from Toulouse, I arrived in Andorra la Vella. The city reminded me of Chongqing with its layered mountain layout, even Google Maps had trouble keeping up. I didn’t know it was duty-free, so discovering prices were cheaper than France was a pleasant surprise. Naturally, I ended up shopping more than I planned. The town is scenic, with ancient stone buildings set against dramatic mountains. It’s known as a budget ski getaway for the French and Spanish, and even in warmer months, it has its charm. I saw pensioners dancing and singing in the street — unexpectedly wholesome. All in all, Andorra is a peaceful little escape with beautiful views and a touch of shopping delight. A hidden gem, indeed.
