Designing a City’s Voice for Diversity: Postcards that Connect landmarks with Inclusion

Challenge

For the annual Deutscher Diversity Tag, the City of Cologne launched an open call for designs that could capture the spirit of inclusivity, diversity, and local pride. The challenge was to create a set of postcards that felt both playful and meaningful—reflecting Cologne’s cultural icons while representing people of all backgrounds, identities, and beliefs.

Process

I designed a series of illustrated postcards inspired by beloved Cologne landmarks and traditions—such as the Cologne Cathedral, the Hohenzollern Bridge, Carnival, Gamescom, and FC Köln’s mascot goat, Hennes. Each card pairs a familiar city symbol with an inclusive message and on the back of each card is one piece of demographic fact—connecting visual storytelling with real data. The designs were selected as winners and officially printed and circulated across the city.

Result

The postcards received enthusiastic feedback and wide distribution, prompting further commissions from major Cologne public institutions including RheinEnergie, KVB, SWK, KölnBäder, AWB, AVG, Kliniken Köln, and more. Each organization received a customized set of Diversity Day postcards aligned with their identity and audience—making the project not only a public celebration of inclusion, but a scalable communication tool used by institutions across the city.
